Open Knowledge Festival 2014, the biggest open data and open knowledge event organized by the Open Knowledge Foundation to date, took place in Berlin, Germany between 15th and 18th of July. I'd love to bring some of the most interesting sessions and conversations to your attention and hence, I decided to re-post parts of the Techpresident (Personal Democracy Media blog) live coverage of the #OKFest14 by the engine room, an organization which supports innovation in advocacy by matchmaking between existing support networks of technologists, support organizations and advocates. |
Numerous problems recorded in conduction of the Census

In the end of march CA Why not? introduced their Analysis of civil monitoring of the 2013 Census, which was conducted as a part of a CensusMonitor project conducted by CA Why not? and Equality coalition. CensusMonitor's goal was, above all, to inform the citizens about their rights and obligations, census forms and technical aspects of the census, but also to record all irregularities via mapping site and direct contact through email and phone and to analyze census legal framework and its preliminary results. |
Stop Targeting Civil Society in Hungary!

Since its re-election, the Hungarian government launched a campaign attacking the credibility of Hungarian NGOs and is striving to gain control over their funding distributed independently from the government. We believe that a dynamic and independent civil society plays a fundamental role in a democratic society, as it is one of the key checks and balances to governing power. As demonstrated by Putin’s Russia, the harassment of the civil sector could easily lead to the criminalization of NGOs and could effectively hinder their work. We stand in solidarity with the Hungarian NGOs and call on the Hungarian and all other governments to refrain from harassing civil society! |
Live from London: The Poynter Global Fact-Checking Summit

Fact-checking organizations from six continents gathered at the London School of Economics on Monday for the start of the Poynter Global Fact-Checking Summit – the first-ever worldwide meeting of fact checkers.FCP logo “The world needs more clarions of fact-based truth,” Poynter president Tim Franklin said in his welcoming remarks. And increasingly around the world, those clarions are not actually journalists.
