People and Memories Talk - Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice Programme

Project “People and Memories Talk” aim is to comfortably construct society general understanding and importance of documentation of individual and collective war stories, contribution on historiography by using individual stories, responding to victims needs, understanding and empathizing with people which physically or materially were victimized and will raise awareness among society and institutional representatives to give more efforts on finding missing persons and bringing to justice perpetrators who were engaged on crime committing. Since dealing with the past and transitional justice is such a complex and sensitive process to the post-war societies, Integra aims to use media (visual documentation, chronological and constructive storytelling) and web platforms to collect true memories of victims from the latest war in Kosovo (1990 – 1999) in order to contribute on transparency and increase the watchdog role of civil society for the work and efforts of policy makers, when it comes to the victims, truth finding, dealing with the past and transitional justice. This will particularly help elevating citizen’s mindset for governmental accountability specifically on endeavors to find the missing persons, recovering victim’s families dignity and help bringing perpetrators into justice. This project once again proves social readiness and will to contribute on dealing with the past process through means of technology and information.

Ndryshimi

By recording and documenting the memories of victims of the war, we aim to contribute to the process of dealing with the past, promoting strengthening individual and collective memories through the recognition of the universal nature of human suffering and solidarity. Through ensuring authentic testimonies and life histories from the war, we wish to preserve individual human experiences so as to help directly to the status of victims, inter-ethnic peace, contribute to cherishing human solidarity, and aid the building of trust. INTEGRA considers that combining our methodology of public hearings of victims and documentation of true stories through short narrative documentary films with online web platforms for outreach purposes will enable a greater general understanding of the positions of victims and will largely contribute to the process of dealing with the past and transitional justice Integra also aims to make a global involvement in the process of truth finding in Kosovo by actively involving citizens of Kosovo through online platform and engaging citizens of the world on these processes, contribution to the development of transitional justice and at the same time efforts to raise awareness of human rights in accordance with international conventions

Teknologjia

A Documentary film is a great way of exploiting cinema’s potential for observing life. It is a visual expression that strives to document reality. It is also often regarded as a film-making practice, a cinematic tradition, and mode of audience reception. A good short documentary film in the form of a multimedia presentation can leave the most powerful impact on the viewer’s mind. The connotation of the word documentary is of something factual and objective. The simplest definition of documentary film is that it is non-fiction film-making; that it documents reality/truth in a straight forward way. Of course, a deeper look at documentary complicates any such simple definition. We also have chosen to emphasize that documentary films have messages that they want their audience to accept as truth. Due to the very fragile situation in respect of Human Rights in Kosovo, due to collective hatred against other nationalities, due to inferiority feeling of citizens of Kosovo, Integra has decided that the basic methodology of this project is the distribution of information and knowledge about Human Rights through short documentaries with personal war stories of victims. Since society and political spectrum is generally neglecting these matters, Integra sees as very important working directly with victims and sharing their experiences to the wider audience. At the same time the tools that will be used to work in this regard are very popular for that particular community and society in general; documentaries with war stories content. Considering that this project’s ultimate goal is production of 100 short narrative documentary films (47 have been produced and are being broadcast on KTV – Koha Vision) Integra has planned to develop web page, in Albanian and English. Having in mind the latest developments and importance of web technology, where the modern communication is being hosted by computers and web technology, Integra is considering this as a very important and productive tool for informational aspects to the society in Kosovo and wider. Produced documentaries will be available any time for target audience in a wider scale, including regions and world-wide. The web page, will also include a interactive space with audience where they can submit or let Integra know that he/she is interested to share its personal war story/experience in our Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice Program by submitting a short version of their story. The site will be developed in a very creative way with a documentation and dealing with the past spirit, good layout and attractive appearance. The tentative domain for the web would be: www.peopleandmemoriestalk-kosovo.com The web site will contain all produced short narrative documentary films in our Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice program. Integra will keep publishing documentaries in the web page as soon as one is produced and after broadcast premieres in KTV - Koha Vision. The web site will be promoted on social networks by creating a specific page exclusively for the web of short narrative documentary films.

Qëndrueshmëria

The key to success in improving the situation of victims in Kosovo is the right information and providing information at National and local level. Targets of the project in selected municipalities can not imagine themselves coexisting with citizens of any other nationality, where their past is more hatred, revenge and blood. Project activities are designed in a form that, at different national levels, involve citizens in the process of improving the situation of Human Rights and empathizing with the sufferings of others, once understand and start living in prosperous ways. These activities are directed at a wider target group, where age and gender do not matter. What matters is changing attitudes, thoughts, interpersonal relations, even when ethnic prejudices are filled with history, pain and hatred. Sustainability of the entire project is ensured when the general aim and objective is completed by producing a set of 100 documentaries, which furthermore will have geographical coverage of entire republic of Kosovo and parallel gender diversity which will reflect clearly the events and crimes occurred during the last war in Kosovo. This will aim on creation of general social understanding of importance of personal stories and contribution of these stories on developing a democratic and peaceful society. It is worth mentioning that Integra so far has produced a series of Narrative Documentary Films, numerically consisting of 47, so the sustainability of the project is still ongoing. Broadcasting the premieres and reprisals of Narrative Documentary Films “People and Memories Talk” in National and Local Television, Online Virtual broadcasting, Festivals, Conferences, etc. are the most powerful element of project sustainability in the following years. Therefore the most powerful sustainability of the project is the web platform which's aim is twofold, to reach a wider audience (worldwide) and enable citizens (victims from the last war in Kosovo to raise their voice and share their stories through our program/documentaries.
