Security Matters!

Our project concerns security issues that are of importance to the citizens of BiH. We would like to enable anyone interested in posing a video question in regards to security matters to a specific politician or institution in BiH to do so. We will post it on our Facebook page and YouTube channel, advertise it on our Twitter page, as well as forward it to the relevant institution to obtain a specific answer. The replies we receive will be further posted on our social media pages with the relevant questions, thus available to the wider public.

Security Matters! is a project aimed at empowering the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina to actively participate in the security issues of their country, to actively question the actions (or the lack of actions) of their politicians and the international organizations present in BiH. This project gives people the much needed tools to bring attention to the matters that concern them and are relevant in their daily lives. The aim of the project is to increase the public interest in security matters and to make politicians and officials accountable for the steps they take in making BiH a more secure country to live in, leading to a country where transparency is an accepted and valued practice.

Tehnologija

Security Matters! is created as a completely online project. The questions of the interested citizens will be filmed and posted as short 10-20 second videos. We will use our online social networks (Facebook, YouTube and Twitter) to post the questions and make the general public aware of the issues at hand. Furthermore, the questions in the videos will be forwarded to the relevant institutions in an email format through the Centre for Security Studies (CSS). We will follow up on every question, posting the replies we receive with every video. We intend to encourage avid discussions on the questions and answers in the online community through the use of social networks and the viewers comments and shares to broaden our audience.

Vremenski okvir i ciljevi

The pilot of the project was launched on March 27, 2013, featuring a series of five questions. The questions have been posted on our YouTube Channel, on our Facebook page, as well as advertised on our Twitter page. We emailed the relevant institutions and politicians and have successfully received timely replies to three of the questions. The replies were made public through our social media. Given the successful results of the pilot, we would like to continue the project, with the objective of increasing the participation of the public. So far we have only given the opportunity to ask questions to people who live in Sarajevo, and who have attended events organized by the Centre for Security Studies. Our aim is to broaden the spectrum of people participating in the project, increasing our outreach to many cities in BiH and enabling people of all ages, social backgrounds and occupations to participate and pose questions that they would like to receive answers to. We see this as a project uniting the various social and age groups into one - of citizens of BiH - not stratifying them further by age, status, and education. Through this project we aim to bring together citizens and open a discussion on issues of security that concerns each and everyone.

Izgradnja zajednice

People will find out about our project through a number of online platforms, mainly our Facebook and Twitter pages, our website, as well as our YouTube Channel. There will also be active campaigning at the events organized by the Centre. We will enable people to pose their questions to our camera at every event, as well as at other occasions. To reach a larger audience of participants we hope to engage citizens 'offline' by interviewing people on the streets of cities in BiH, at NGOs, universities, institutes, etc. At the later stages of the project, we hope to hold a specific day event aimed at increasing the awareness of the citizens and providing them an opportunity to approach us and pose their questions.

Održivost

This project has started out by our Centre with the aim of developing a further online platform for citizens to question specific institutions and/or politicians. However, it has great potential to develop and expand. Apart from providing opportunities to film and post questions via the CSS, we will eventually encourage citizens to upload their own videos to our pages, or to send us questions in written form, which we will film and ask on their behalf. The project has potential to further be transformed into the format of a mini-forum, through the use of Google Hangout, or further, to be incorporated into a university class curriculum, to which government officials or representatives of international organizations would be invited to to speak on various issues of security in BiH. Security Matters! could further serve as a model of online communication and a tool for enhancing transparency for other CSOs to use in regards to other important issues in society or portfolios they work on.
